Black Friday 2026: A Checkout Checklist That Keeps Conversions Up at Peak Traffic
Black Friday falls on Friday, November 27 this year, and for most e-shops it kicks off the strongest part of the year, running straight into the Christmas season. Ad budgets grow and discounts are planned weeks ahead – yet a large share of revenue still ends up stuck in unfinished carts.
According to long-running research by the Baymard Institute, shoppers abandon around 70% of online carts. Leaving aside those who were just browsing, the most common reasons are high extra costs (40%), slow delivery (20%), not trusting the site (19%), forced account creation (18%) and a checkout that is too long or complicated (17%).
Each of these obstacles gets worse on Black Friday: more visitors, more first-time customers, more mobile shopping and less patience.
Here are seven fixes you can still make before the peak, plus a checklist at the end.
1. Show the total price including shipping as early as possible
An unexpected fee in the final step is the most common reason shoppers leave. During a sale it hurts even more, because people came for the price. Show shipping costs in the cart, clearly state the free-shipping threshold and show how much is left to reach it.
2. Communicate delivery dates
After Black Friday, shoppers start buying gifts. If they don't know whether the parcel will arrive in time, they postpone the purchase – or buy elsewhere. Show an estimated delivery time for every carrier and, as Christmas approaches, the last order date for delivery before the holidays.
3. Allow guest checkout
Black Friday brings many customers who are buying from you for the first time. Mandatory registration is an unnecessary barrier for them. Offer guest checkout and let them create an account on the thank-you page – in one click, from the details they have already entered.
4. Shorten the form and speed up address entry
Most purchases during a sale happen on mobile, where every extra field is felt. Keep only the information you really need to fulfil the order. The address is where you save the most time: with autocomplete, shoppers type a few characters of the street and the house number, city and postal code fill in automatically and correctly.
- Hide company details behind a “Buying for a company” checkbox.
- Use a numeric keyboard for phone and postal code fields.
- Let the browser autofill name and email (autocomplete attributes).
- Show error messages next to the field right away, not after the form is submitted.
5. Test your checkout under load
The most expensive bug is the one you discover on Friday morning. Place test orders on mobile and desktop, with every payment method and every carrier. Check that discount codes work, that free shipping is calculated correctly and that your payment gateway can handle higher traffic. Confirm with your hosting provider or platform how they are prepared for the peak.
6. Watch the discount code field
A prominent empty “Discount code” field sends shoppers off to search for coupons elsewhere – and some of them never come back. If you run a store-wide discount, apply it automatically. Keep the code field, but make it less prominent, for example as an expandable link.
7. Prepare for address errors
More orders also means more typos in addresses. Every undelivered parcel costs shipping both ways, customer support time and often the customer too. Validating the address directly in the form catches the mistake before it becomes a problem in the warehouse.
Pre-Black Friday checklist
- Shipping costs are visible in the cart.
- The free-shipping threshold is clearly communicated.
- Carriers show estimated delivery and Christmas cut-off dates.
- Guest checkout is available.
- The form contains only essential fields.
- Addresses are autocompleted and validated.
- A test order on mobile went through without errors.
- All payment methods and discount codes have been tested.
- Store-wide discounts apply automatically.
- Customer support knows how to handle order issues.
What to do this week
- Go through the checklist above and note who will handle each item and by when.
- Place a test order on your own phone over mobile data – from the cart all the way to the confirmation email.
- Check your carriers' Christmas cut-off dates and add delivery information to the cart and your site.
- Agree with customer support on how they will handle order questions and incorrect addresses during Black Friday week.
You can also speed up address entry with an address autocomplete tool such as Launify.
